SKETCH NIGHT

My summers spent studying and drawing the human figure at Interlochen were some of the best summers I’ve had in my life. I remember those summers surrounded by an incredible assortment of artists who lived and breathed the world of fine arts, music, and dance. It was another world tucked in the woods of northwestern Michigan between two lakes.

So many years have past since I’ve done much figure drawing, which is why I decided to try sketch night at the Society of Illustrators.

Spending an evening sketching models dressed in Natori hosted by the wonderful Bil Donovan, reminded me of my summers at Interlochen. The room was filled with this great passionate energy and incredible talent in every direction. It was fun to loosen up my stiffened drawing hand to capture fashion from a different perspective…

Here are my sketches from the night of 2 min, 5 min, 7 min, and 10 min drawings.

The Society of Illustrators: Winsor & Newton

Winsor&Newton_Post2

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be showing some original pieces at the Society of Illustrators in New York City on October 13th in partnership with Winsor & Newton!

Winsor & Newton is a brand I’ve been using for my entire lifetime as an artist, so this partnership is quite meaningful. Alongside the launch of Winsor & Newton Pigment Markers, they’ve asked a number of talented artists and illustrators to create original pieces in the new medium under the theme Color Your City. Artists who I’m incredibly honored to be shown alongside!

I will be working on a live collaborative piece throughout the evening with 2 other artists, Bil Donovan and Jon Burgerman.

I would love to invite you to experience the event with me, and am giving away 50 tickets. Please send an email to the below to reserve your ticket!

COLOR A MEMORY

ColorMemory_BEHR_1DancingRose_Square

My memories are filled with sounds, smells, and especially colors. The tiny sound of Swan Lake playing as I wound up my plastic ballerina who spun in her pink netted tutu. My jewelry box as a little girl was a treasure of mine. It’s where I not only kept as much costume jewelry as I could get my hands on, but also my daily treasures… marbles, smooth skipping rocks, dried flowers, drawings, coins, and weirdly, my favorite monopoly piece (the ship!). It was my little rose colored vault.

Looking back, the items I kept in my jewelry box are still very much relevant in my life. Ballerinas and the treasures of nature are some of my greatest pleasures.

My bedroom in New York makes me feel as if I’m living inside my own ballerina box. My walls clad in the perfect mysterious rose.
