I worked on my first fashion editorial just last year…and I loved it so much that I’m back for more! This time creating abstract watercolor backdrops. What began as a casual coffee conversation with my two friends, Misha and Debbie, quickly manifested into a fashion editorial; Fade to Black, in Tatler Hong Kong’s April issue.
Last year, Jordan approached me about illustrating her new book, Ramshackle Glam: The New Mom’s Haphazard Guide to (Almost) Having It All. Here’s a look at the process behind the cover illustration…
Illustrating a book about being a new mom was a a new type of challenge… of course, I know absolutely nothing about being a new mom! We wanted to convey both Jordan’s quirky-glam personality, as well as something any new mom could relate to in one image.
My first draft illustration (above) seemed like a fine idea to me, until we quickly realized that storing a baby bottle and extra shoes in the same place is less than sanitary. (Whoops!)
I experimented with various perspectives, and various props… trying to figure out which viewpoint captured the message in the most instantaneous way.
and alas, we found the look we wanted…
Change the bag a bit… and voilá!
Check out the book for more than 20 illustrations scattered throughout!
Honored to have my work featured alongside many great talents in Taschen’s upcoming publication of Illustration Now! Fashion by Julius Wiedemann.

Being an illustrator, it isn’t everyday that you are involved in a fashion editorial shoot… so this was something new for me. It flooded my mind with ideas! One of my favorite projects to date… bringing fashion photography together with an illustrated world. Not to mention the inspiring team that brought this all together. It’s a magical thing when a group of people come together and just get it!
