COPLEY SQUARE IN WHITE / GIVEAWAY

CopleySquareBlizzard

As you know, I’m quite the snow fanatic, so it seemed only fitting to capture the beauty of the Blizzard of 2013 in illustration form. One of my favorite (and most beautiful) areas in Boston is Copley Square. The Old South Church’s architecture is enough to make anyone ooh and ahh! I took a long and freezing walk to Boston from Harvard Square the morning after the blizzard, and oh… it’s a walk I’ll never forget! There were almost no cars in sight, and just a few scattered people (some on skis). It made for the most picturesque Boston I’ve ever seen.  It was such a perfect day.

I’m sure I littered everyone’s instagram feed with more than enough snow photos… which brings me to the giveaway! I’ve taken a photography class here and there, but I’ve never really learned the in’s and out’s of the art. Capturing moments via photo is something I’m nearly as passionate about as illustrating, in fact, they go hand in hand. The same way illustration captures a moment… it’s about finding and seeing that unique moment.

This March I’m taking the Camera Ready Bootcamp here in Boston. I’m excited to learn how to use an SLR, and give my iPhone camera a rest (yes I take every single photo you see on my blog with my iPhone!). We’ll be spending the day learning the basics of the camera, shooting techniques, and editing tricks. The girls over at Camera Ready are going to giveaway a spot to their class to one of you! Check out the class description to see if it’s something you’d be interested in here.

What a beautiful painting. I am very enchanted by snow as well and I hope to see a proper snow day someday. It’s such a pity that I’m not in the area, if not I would definitely enter the contest. I love photography!

  2. Kelsey says:

I’d love to take the class because I have an SLR but don’t know how to use the manual setting! And I wish I could get my photos to look like what i see in my head! I would love to go to the Boston class so much!

  3. Kathryn says:

Moments are so precious and I feel lucky when my camera is on hand to capture the moment. I think being able to capture those moments well, to really make them shine, would be beautiful! I would love to attend the Boston class!

  6. Loved seeing all of your instagram photos during the blizzard (particularly from the warmth of my couch!).

  7. Julia says:

These pictures are absolutely beautiful and capture the softness of the snow so incredibly! It makes what feels like never ending piles of mush bearable :) I’d love to take the Boston Camera Ready class because I’ve been trained in my manual film camera, but never with my digital SLR. I hope to learn how to best use it as I have a love of photography that I hope to grow with the tools I already have. Plus I’d love to have a fun afternoon and meet some new people who also have this interest! Thanks for sharing this opportunity!

Hi Katie! I’m a huge fan of your work! I just started to get into illustration and would love to enhance my photography skills as well (my SLR has been collecting dust since I bought it!). I’d love to take the Boston class because I think it’s time to learn to use my camera, plus it will give me an excuse to drive up to Boston and take my little sister out to dinner. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Anathalia says:

Hello Katie! I “found” you during the storm, on Instagram! Love your pictures! I would like to take the class in Boston to learn how to use my SLR camera in its full potential. I just moved to Boston in December and I would love to takes good pictures of this beautiful city that I already love!

I would love to take the Western MA class. F-stop, what is that? You photos are amazing. You have some crazy skill with that iPhone, I can’t wait to see what you can capture with an SLR!

I would love to win the class in Boston!! I have a DSLR, and I’ve gotten pretty good at taking pictures of my artwork with it. Once I get outside of the light box (and into the real world!), I just put the camera on automatic :( If I win the spot, I would hope to learn more about the manual settings, and how to deal with things like harsh sunlight. This weekend my husband and I were in Copley Square, and we took a lot of pictures like this:

Totally overexposed and super bright from the sun bouncing off the snow!! Grr….

I’ve got my fingers crossed that I might be lucky enough to win!!

  12. I would love to win the Boston class! It would be great to add some more original content to my growing blog and while I have an SLR I never ever use it – except for the annual Christmas card picture of the kids. There is no doubt an SLR takes better photos than the iPhone but I need the inspiration and knowledge to use it more. I’m all about color and what better way to share my love of it than with beautiful photos! Here’s hoping I win!

  13. Jenn says:

I would love to take the Camera Ready class because I have tons of cameras, and no photography knowledge base. I’m a horrible self-teacher but I just buy cameras hoping it will work out because photography as an art form is so beautiful to me! I’d love to be able to capture things the way I see them, rather than the way the camera’s auto setting sees them. I also love to draw and paint the things I take pictures of so having better control of my photography skills would help with that also! I liked the page on facebook! And would be interested in the Boston class should I win!

  14. SanTara says:

I would love to win a spot in the Camera Ready Boston Class so I can learn how to take better beauty product pictures as well as capture great event moments. My pictures are decent but I would like them to be pin worthy like the pictures about. I love the artistic feel of the photos above. I believe that proper training and knowledge will be of great use and certainly lead to advancement.

  15. Monica Lee says:

Oh Perfect timing, I would love to win the Boston class!! 2 weeks ago, I purchased a Canon Rebel T4i for video but I just don’t know how to take pics with it. I would love to take pictures for my blog, for products and most of all for my painting. I did a FB like and will instagram too!

PS That was quite a storm AND I adore the painting you did, katie. Your work is so fabulous! I don’t have as much time to paint as I would like but coming to your blog always ignites a spark!

  16. Carolann says:

I have been a fan of photography for years and years, but due to everyday life getting in the way, I just haven’t had time to really hone my skills and immerse myself in this fabulous and utterly personal art. I would like to take the class because I would love just to be a professional photographer – even if it is only for a short time. I would love to be able to take the Boston class.

  17. Melissa says:

Gorgeous photos! I just signed up to take the Saturday March 2nd class and can’t wait. Although, it would seem that perhaps I should of waited since you’re offering this amazing giveaway :)
